Hey everyone!

School is winding down and dreams of summer barbeques and pool parties are quickly wafting through our minds. Before you lock up your instrument case and bury it under your bed in anticipation of next year’s CBA music season, check out these awesome summer music opportunities through the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra organization! There are dozens of summer camps, ensembles and even tours to choose from. They range from local to international and provide an exciting opportunity to play with other musically passionate students and learn from talented professionals. Some programs even offer scholarships or other incentives, so don’t hesitate to check out the ones that interest you!

Good luck and happy playing!

Week #2 Assignments

Posted by cbam0491 on September 23, 2011 in Uncategorized |

Hello Everyone!

We have now completed Week #2 and everyone seems to be really getting into the swing of things. Here’s what to work on to stay sharp and get ready for next week.

Int/Adv Band

  • Practice A Childhood Hymn and A Carol Celebration
  • Wind Players: Practice the chromatic scale for your instrument (found on the Class Handouts Page)

Advanced Strings

  • D major scale. One octave for most, two octaves for those who are able
  • Strings Extraordinaire page 11: Gavotte by Handel
  • Strings Extraordinaire page 12: King W’s March by Clarke

Beginning Strings

Page numbers refer to Strictly Strings Book 1 – same page numbers for each instrument. Bring your book to every class.

TUNING:  page 38 shows tuning notes’ location on piano keyboard.  Sing the name of each pitch as teacher adjusts all your instruments. Singing trains your ear.

POSTURE:  page 4 has good pictures. In general sit tall, on front of seat, well balanced.  Violinists and violists need shoulder rests to help free their left hand. Cellists and bassists use endpin and body to hold instrument, leaving hands free. Cellists need endpin strap or “stop.”

FINGERS:  page 5 has good pictures. Index finger is #1.  Listen for “Do, Re, Mi” to space fingers the right distance apart.  Sing “D, E, F-sharp.” Practice plucking all of page 9.

READING:   Although we cannot practice every page in our short time together, please read pages we skip.  Learn definitions on page 7 for quarter note, rest, bar line and repeat sign. All the “boxes” at tops of pages are good information.  Study how page 9 and page 17 are alike.

BOWING:  page 2 tells about tightening and loosening, not touching the hair. Never over-tighten. Page 6 has good pictures of how to hold the bow. Above all keep your bow hand relaxed and flexible.

HOME PRACTICE:  Start with short sessions but stay as regular as possible: 15 minutes, done 6 times in a week, are better than two 45-minute sessions for example.  When you’re more advanced, you’ll have more material to learn and shall need longer sessions. For now, find a consistent “time slot” to keep as regular as possible.  Use practice form on CBA website to record your practice time.

OTHER TIPS:  Sing more! It trains the ear and feeds the spirit! Listen to good music often – the classical station locally is 90.9 FM.   Try to meet Mr. or Mrs. Schneider for extra individual help by appointment (contact info below). Use the internet only supervised, and with caution; however, there are good basic photos on a site called Michael Hopkins String Pedagogy Notebook.  These pages called “Pedagogical Information” are fine.  (We don’t recommend all that site’s information on instrument care, or on books and resources).
Happy Practicing!

Welcome Back! Week #1 Announcements

Posted by cbam0491 on September 16, 2011 in Uncategorized |

Congratulations to everyone on a successful first day of classes!

We are so excited to see so many old and new faces joining us this year! The energy today was incredible! Thank you so much to everyone who chipped in to help us hit the ground running as we embark on a brand new school year.

We have so many great things planned for this year, and we can’t wait to get started!

Each week, the practice assignments for each group will be posted right here on our home page, so you can reference them throughout the week. The easiest way to keep track of these assignments is to sign up for our email subscription, labeled “News Updates”, at the top right corner of this page. This way you will get each practice assignment sent straight to your personal inbox!

We have also added a new page called “Class Handouts” where you can download and print practice sheets, warm-up exercises, and other handouts Mr. Fogleman and Mr. & Mrs. Schneider distribute in class (just in case they get lost in the black hole known as your music folder).

If you have any questions throughout the year and want to contact any of the directors, or just have a comment you would like to share with them, feel free to use our Contact Us form to shoot them a quick email.

So we again extend a warm welcome to our new members, and an enthusiastic welcome back to all of our returning students. You guys are the reason we get so pumped up for each and every school year!

The Final Countdown!

Posted by cbam0491 on September 8, 2011 in Uncategorized |

Hey everyone!

We’re in the final countdown to the start of classes! Just 1 more week! Which also means you have just 1 week to get your registrations in so that we have a chair for you on that first day of classes!

Remember, the first day can be a bit chaotic, and you can help ease the chaos by making sure you pre-register before the day of classes. This will speed up the intake of final tuition and ensure everyone has a positive experience next Thursday!

For those of you that have already registered, remember that the remainder of your tuition will be due on the first day of classes.

Have a great week!
